Collecting resources in Shattered Isles goes far beyond picking up items that monsters drop or buying them from a shop. Every material you see in the world of Archai can be found in at least one region using a wide variety of abilities known as Gathering Skills. Any player regardless of profession can learn these skills. New gathering abilities become available as the player advances their overall Trade Ability. One does this by advancing any of their current gathering and crafting skills. For more information on crafting skills, click here. These two skill groups are also referred to as 'Common Skills' because of their open availability to everyone.

The following is a list of current Gathering Skills available and a brief explanation of what they do:

  • Wood Chopping -With this common skill, a player can find good trees, chop a few down, and the chop up the wood for carrying. Trees for chopping are best found in forests. The wood can then be used for building fires, fletching arrows, or crafting other roleplay oriented items.

  • Gem Extracting -This skill is used specifically for locating precious stones. Gems are most commonly found in underground caves, mines, and along mountain surfaces.

  • Ore Mining - Requires the player to be holding a pick axe. This skill allows the player to mine for metal ores found in stone surfaces such as caves and mountains. Every metal available in Shattered Isles can be mined for in at least one location in the realm.

  • Digging - Requires the player to be holding a shovel or pick axe. Digging is used for collecting stones, rock, sand, and coal. These resources are most often found in cave areas, mountain surfaces, beaches, and swamps.

  • Foraging - With this common skill, a player carefully scans an area for any naturally growing plants which may be edible. Foraging is best done in forests and on plains.

  • Shearing - Perhaps the least interesting of the gathering skills, shearing allows the player to collect wool from sheep. The wool is useful to merchants who specialize in Tailoring.

  • Speculating - Players can use the speculate command to scan the nearby area in search of resources. This is an advanced skill players gain from advancing their Trade Ability.

  • Skinning - Requires the player to be holding a skinning knife. Not every creature you kill in Shattered Isles can be skinned, however, almost all animals have some sort of useable resources that can be collected through skinning. This includes their fur and hides, meat, bones, and blood. More unique races will leave behind equally unique body parts.

  • Fishing - This skill requires the player to be holding a fishing pole, and be in or near water. Player can fish from a shore room that is located next to a water room, as well as while swimming on the water's surface.

  • Scrapping - This skill allows a player to scrap one or more identical items into their component resources, which can then be used by the other common skills. Some materials require that a fire be built before scrapping can begin. The yield on scrapping is always 1 pound of material resources per 5 pounds of items.
